I relocated for work when I had almost nothing, so here’s the practical version. A move to a new city comes down to two numbers.
The first is the cost difference: what the same life costs there versus where you are now, especially rent, which usually changes the most. A job that pays 10% more in a city where rent runs 30% higher can leave you worse off, so run that comparison before anything else.
The second is your landing cushion: the move-in cash on the far end, plus enough to cover a few weeks of expenses while your first paycheck clears, which can be three or four weeks out.
Plenty of people move with very little and land fine. The trouble comes from moving without knowing those two numbers and finding them out the hard way somewhere you don’t know anyone. Aim for a city where your income stretches further, not just one with a bigger paycheck.
Run the comparison: the free cost-of-living comparison tool shows whether the move leaves you ahead, and what you need saved to land.
